Hanging out in the big trees at the Oak grove is an amazing experience! There are possibly few places that could compare (especially nearby). First of all I'd like to clear the misconception that it is an oak grove, there are also redwood trees and doriander trees. Homely platforms have been built in a majority of the trees complete with tarp roofs to protect from the weather. The generosity and support of the community is evident in the ammount of supplies and gear in use, such as climbing ropes to rapel between trees, platforms, sleeping gear, ropes, food and water. Every Sunday, Berkeley grandmothers and supporters gather outside the double fence line to deliver more food and supplies to keep the tree sitters fed and provided for.
- The tree sitters are in their private never-never-land, it is always day there thanks to the bright loud generators
provided by UCB, and the cops and security guards are like Pan's pesky pirates whom the tree sitters take great liberty to harrass in any way they can, (save for throwing stuff at).
- For instance How many cops does it take to change a lightbulb? Well when a tree sitter cuts the powerlines to their
loud polluting generator lights, it takes: 6 security guards to stand around with radios and videocameras, 2 cops to make the report, ? cops on the other end of the radio, 2 more cops to do further investigation and ignore the treesitters, 2 truck drivers to deliver more lights and haul the broken ones away, about 2 hours and at least 13 cops!
- One of my favorite heckles is "We don't need more lights, throw your money at me!" Yet I also know and believe that this tree sit is important and vital for not only these trees, but to bring
awareness of the treasures that old growth trees represent, especially within the cities. I believe that the UCB tree sit will be successful and the tree sitters will not come down until those trees are deemed safe and protected. Furthermore, I also believe that through the media and public awareness that has been brought about by this action, many more inner city old growth trees will be saved from the plight of overdevlopment.
